Many taxpayers are awaiting their 2021 tax refund, and those who frequently check their Where’s My Refund status or the IRS website may notice two things which seem troubling or confusing. Here’s what to do if a Tax Topics 152 message appears, or you notice that your status bars have disappeared.
For those of you who have had your status bars disappear, this does not mean that anything is wrong with your tax return or refund. Instead, this seems to be a website or programming glitch on the IRS end. You can try accessing the tool from a different device, a different browser type, or clearing your cache or cookies.
This may solve the issue for some, but in most cases, this is a glitch on the IRS site and it should clear itself and come back to being functional within a few hours, or up to a few days.
For those of you who are seeing Tax Topic 152, this is actually a good thing. Tax Topic 152 is a generic message which will apply to everyone who will be receiving a refund from the IRS. This message confirmed that the IRS is processing your return and refund — no action is needed on your part and there is no cause for alarm. If you don’t see this message, or only see it briefly, this is also not cause for concern. This message does not tell us any additional information about your refund or time frame, but simply seems to mean that the IRS is processing your return to get a more detailed picture of your status.
